“Using Family Letters as Sources and as Characters in Family History Research” with NYG&BS Trustee, Iain H. Bruce

Saturday, March 15, 2025, 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Networking at 10 a.m.

Virtual Meeting

The fundamental purpose of family correspondence was the maintenance of kinship ties across time and space. The presentation will cover where and how to look for letters and how to get the most of their content. Extracting the context of each letter will be emphasized: that includes the writer and the recipients and their actual experiences, emotions, decision-making and disagreements, that are not generally not visible in other records.

Iain is a former Connecticut resident and retired financial services executive who has been researching his family history in the United States, Canada and Britain for three decades. He is currently a candidate for an MA in history at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario. He is a New York Genealogical & Biographical Society (NYG&B) trustee and former Board Chair.
